Concept & History
The Big Pilot’s Watch in black ceramic has been a staple of IWC’s TOP GUN line since 2012; the line’s name refers to the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School. With the reference IW329801, this concept was first translated into an ergonomically designed 43-mm case in April 2022 and added to the permanent collection. High contrast, consistent magnetic field protection, and the absence of a date display define its instrument-like character.
Caliber & Technology
Inside, the watch is powered by the in-house caliber 82100, an automatic movement with a Pellaton winding system, whose winding components are made of low-wear ceramic. The power reserve is 60 hours, and the frequency is 28,800 vph; the construction comprises 168 components and 22 jewels. The finishing, featuring Côtes de Genève and perlage, remains hidden behind the solid titanium case back. A central seconds hand with a stop function allows for setting to the exact second, while a soft-iron inner case shields the movement from magnetic fields.
Case & Material
The case is made of black zirconia ceramic with high hardness and scratch resistance. With a diameter of 43.8 mm and a height of 13.9 mm, the case is slimmer than the classic Big Pilot case. The case back and screw-down crown are made of titanium; the case back is engraved with the TOP GUN logo, the inscription “United States Navy Fighter Weapons School,” and the specification 10 bar. The protective film on the case back is intact on this particular watch. The domed sapphire crystal, with anti-reflective coating on both sides, is secured against pressure loss; the lug width is 21 mm.
Aesthetics & Readability
The black dial features large white Arabic numerals, the triangular marker with two dots at 12 o’clock, and the red “TOP GUN” lettering above the “Automatic” inscription. All lettering is centered on the vertical axis. The hands and hour markers are coated with white luminescent material and stand out clearly against the dark background even in low light. The absence of a date window preserves the symmetry. The black textile strap can be changed without tools using the EasX-CHANGE system.
With Manufacturer's warranty until 09/2030 and the condition as good as new, unworn this watch is an almost perfect collector's item and at the same time a functional, elegant tool for the discerning wearer.
