IWC Big Pilot's Watch, Stainless Steel – Ref. IW500201
Concept & History
The Big Pilot was introduced in 2002. The IW500201 was the first model in the collection of the same name. The design is inspired by the German Air Force’s observation watches. With a diameter of 46 mm, the watch is significantly smaller than its historical counterparts. Production of this reference continued until 2006. Later Big Pilot variants differ from this reference. This particular watch was first sold in 2003 and dates from the early years of production.
Caliber & Technology
Inside, the watch is powered by IWC’s in-house Caliber 5011, an automatic movement. The power reserve is seven days, or 168 hours. A power-reserve indicator at 3 o’clock displays the remaining power, while the date appears at 6 o’clock. The finishing includes nickel-plated plates and bridges with circular graining, as well as gold-plated engravings. A sunburst pattern adorns the edge of the plate and several wheels. The skeletonized rotor bears the engraving “Probus Scafusia.” Fine adjustment is performed via an eccentric. The service certificate documents a service performed in 2024. The long power reserve allows the watch to be left unused for several days without stopping.
Case & Material
The case is made of stainless steel. It has a diameter of 46 mm and a case thickness of 15.8 mm. The crystal is made of sapphire. Water resistance is rated at 6 bar (60 m). The large crown is designed for use while wearing gloves. The proportions give the watch a distinct presence on the wrist. Its condition is listed as “Very Good.” Signs of wear are barely visible.
Aesthetics & Readability
The dial is black. The Arabic numerals are made of luminous material, and the hands are coated with luminous material. Both are luminescent and remain legible in low light. The power reserve indicator and date are integrated into the basic layout. The design features no decorative elements. The large dial surface further enhances readability. The package includes the original box, paperwork, and service receipt. This constitutes a complete set.
This full set from 2003 is in excellent condition and, thanks to the recent service, is technically as good as new.
