Concept & History
The 3703 model was introduced in the early 1990s as a special edition that IWC released for the Italian market and named after the Amalfi Coast. The stepped case contour and the curved lugs echo design features of the Grande Complication watches from that era. The total production run comprised 1,066 pieces: 170 in platinum, 128 in yellow gold with a black dial, and 768 in yellow gold with a white dial—this particular piece corresponds to the latter version.
Caliber & Technology
The chronograph is powered by the automatic caliber 7901, a version of the Valjoux 7750 that has been reworked and gold-plated by IWC. The movement features 25 jewels and operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour; it has a power reserve of 44 hours and is regulated in five positions. Unlike the base model, the day-of-the-week display has been omitted in favor of a date-only display. An IWC service performed in 2026 is documented.
Case & Material
The three-piece case, crafted from 18k yellow gold, measures 39 mm and combines a domed, stepped bezel with a generously sized middle section. The crown and chronograph pushers are screw-down, and the case back is press-fit. A domed sapphire crystal protects the dial. The contoured lugs are neatly chamfered, and the interplay of polished surfaces and the stepped bezel edge defines the way light plays on the watch. This piece shows minimal signs of wear on the case and clasp.
Aesthetics & Readability
The white dial features applied gold hour markers and three recessed sub-dials for the small seconds, 30-minute, and 12-hour counters; the date window is located in the sub-dial at 6 o’clock. The gold-colored baton hands stand out clearly against the light background, while the blued subsidiary hands visually separate the chronograph displays. The circumferential minute track enhances the readability of short intervals.
