IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar IW502111
Concept & Heritage
The Portugieser Perpetual Calendar has embodied the most successful interpretation of the perpetual calendar from Schaffhausen since 2003. As the successor to the legendary reference 5021 established the IW502111 the mechanical calendar program developed by Kurt Klaus, which works without manual correction up to the year 2100. The limitation to 250 pieces in 950 platinum underlines the exclusive character of this complication watch, which combines IWC's engineering skills with the design language of the 1930s. The fully coordinated calendar system with radial date hand, month display at 6 o'clock and year display for the century and millennium is a benchmark for user-friendly perpetual calendars.
Caliber & Mechanics
The housing contains the Caliber 50611 - an automatic movement with 62 Stones and the patented Pellaton elevator. The bidirectional winding system, named after its inventor Albert Pellaton (circa 1950), converts rotor movements in both directions into spring energy and is considered to be particularly efficient and shock-resistant. The design with two barrels enables Power reserve of 7 days (168 hours), readable via the concentric display in the outer ring. With a frequency of 18,800 A/h (2.5 Hz) and via 37 mm movement diameter the manufacture caliber fills the case almost completely.
Housing & materiality
The housing in 950 platinum measures 44.2 mm in diameter with an overall height of 15.5 mm. The characteristic design with flat bezel and screw-down sapphire crystal case back provides an insight into the fine finishing of the 50611 caliber. The double moon phase display at 12 o'clock is one of the most precise of its kind with a deviation of just one day in 577.5 years. The black alligator leather strap with Platinum folding clasp completes the appearance. The waterproofness of 3 ATM clearly positions the watch as a haute horlogerie dress watch.
Aesthetics & complication
The silver-colored dial with Arabic numerals The small seconds dial at 9 o'clock shares the same position as the day of the week display, while concentric scales for the date (outside) and power reserve (inside) guarantee maximum legibility. The Kurt Klaus system enables all calendar functions to be adjusted via the crown - a mechanism that set standards in 2003. The NOS condition with full set, limited to 250 pieces and first sale date of 2003 makes this example a rare opportunity for collectors of mechanical complications.
