Eberhard & Co. Chrono 4
Concept & History
Eberhard & Co. was founded in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1887 and specialized in the manufacture of chronographs from an early stage. In 2000, the manufacture introduced the Chrono 4, a line distinguished by the patented arrangement of four totalizers in a row—a unique selling point at the time of its launch that has since become a hallmark of Eberhard & Co. This example of the Reference 31041 was sold new in 2007.
Caliber & Technology
The watch is powered by the Caliber EB 200, which is based on the ETA 2894-2 base movement and has been enhanced with a patented Eberhard module. This module enables the characteristic four-hand display featuring minute, hour, and 24-hour totalizers as well as a small seconds hand, complemented by a date window at 12 o’clock. The chronograph function is controlled in the classic manner via two pushers: start/stop with the upper pusher, reset with the lower pusher. The automatic movement is rated for a water resistance of 5 ATM / 50 m, and the screw-down crown underscores the technical robustness of the design.
Case & Material
The 40 mm stainless steel case is protected by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, while the case back—secured with 8 screws—holds the EB 200 caliber securely in place. The case back also bears the engraving “Eberhard & Co. – Chrono,” a hallmark of the line that is standard in the industry. The design follows the classic aesthetic of the Chrono-4 series without sacrificing period-typical details such as the screw-down crown. The overall condition of this piece is Very Good—minimal signs of wear on the clasp and case back; the crystal is flawless.
Aesthetics & Readability
The black dial with applied hour markers frames the horizontally aligned sub-dials, which give the Chrono 4 its unmistakable readability. Unlike the classic triangular arrangement, all sub-dials are aligned in a single row, making the chronograph functions easy to read at a glance. The date window at 12 o’clock blends unobtrusively into this layout and rounds out the functional, easy-to-read dial design.
