IWC Portugieser Minute Repeater IW544903
The Reference IW544903 is one of the most acoustically complex creations from Schaffhausen and was Limited to 500 pieces in 18-carat white gold. The minute repeater reproduces the hours, quarter hours and minutes using two differently tuned hammers on gongs - a grande complication with over 200 moving components in the Caliber 98950 integrated. The full set status with box and papers as well as the very good state of preservation make this edition a coveted collector's item for connoisseurs of acoustic complications.
Caliber & Acoustics
Inside, the manufactory's own Caliber 98950 with hand-wound mechanism derived from a historical pocket watch movement with minute repeater. The movement has 52 jewels, resonates 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 Hz) and achieves a Power reserve of 46 hours. The large screw balance works with Breguet spiral and fine adjustment via eccentrics. The minute repeater is activated by a slider on the 9 o'clock flank and produces a harmonious sequence of sounds that collectors describe as a „symphony for the ear“.
Housing & processing
The 44 mm 18-carat white gold case achieves an overall height of 14 mm and combines a polished bezel with satin-finished flanks. The water resistance is 3 bar (30 meters) and is suitable for splash water protection. The screwed-in transparent back with sapphire crystal provides a view of the finissage with Côtes de Genève, perlage and anglage. The black Santoni alligator leather strap with 22 mm lug width closes with a White gold folding clasp from. The individual Limitation number (x/500) is engraved on the case back.
Dial & readability
The grey dial with galvanized finish features applied Arabic numerals and Feuille-shaped hands in 18-carat gold. The small seconds at 6 o'clock corresponds with the classic Portugieser architecture, while the rehaut with minute-accurate indices emphasizes the precision. The minute repeater slide on the left flank of the case is discreetly integrated into the overall look and, when pressed, activates the acoustic time display with differently tuned hammer blows on two gongs.
