IWC Portuguese Chronograph Stainless Steel – Ref. IW371401
Concept & History
The Portugieser line dates back to the late 1930s. At that time, two Portuguese businessmen wanted a wristwatch with the precision of a marine chronometer. IWC responded with a large steel case and a pocket watch movement. The Reference 3714 was introduced in 1998. It complemented the Ref. 3712 chronograph with a drag hand as a more accessible variant. It was produced until 2012. According to the case number, this particular example was manufactured in 2002. It thus belongs to the first generation of this reference.
Caliber & Technology
Inside, the automatic caliber 79240 is at work. It is based on the Valjoux 7750. IWC used this movement in the 3714 model until 2007. It was subsequently replaced by the caliber 79350. The movement features 31 jewels. The balance wheel oscillates at 28,800 half-vibrations per hour, corresponding to 4 Hz. The power reserve is 44 hours. Two round pushers control the chronograph. The 30-minute counter is located at 12 o’clock. The small seconds hand runs at 6 o’clock. There is no date or hour counter.
Case & Material
The stainless steel case measures 40.9 mm in diameter. The bezel and lugs are polished. The case sides are satin-finished. A sapphire crystal protects the dial. The solid steel caseback is secured with four screws. It features the engraved inscription “International Watch Co.” around its circumference. The watch is water-resistant to 3 bar. The lug width is 20 mm. The watch is worn on a brown leather strap with contrasting stitching. It fastens with a signed IWC folding clasp.
Aesthetics & Readability
The silvered dial follows the classic Portuguese design. Applied rose-gold Arabic numerals mark the hours. The feuille-style hands are finished in the same shade. The central chronograph hand is blue, standing out clearly against the light background. Both sub-dials are positioned along the vertical axis, creating a symmetrical layout on the dial. A dot-marked minute track encircles the numerals, and a finely graduated seconds scale runs along the edge. Even when the chronograph is running, the time can be read clearly.
