Eberhard & Co. Chrono 4 Temerario
Concept & History
In 2001, Eberhard & Co. introduced the Chrono 4, a chronograph featuring four sub-dials arranged in a single row. The idea originated with Palmiro Monti, who was heading the company at the time. The Temerario followed in 2005: the row of sub-dials was rotated vertically and incorporated into a tonneau-shaped case. Three patents accompany the model—for the movement design, the crown access, and the clasp. This particular example, reference 31047, was first sold in Italy in November 2007.
Caliber & Technology
Inside, the watch is powered by the automatic caliber EB. 250, based on the ETA 2894. An additional mechanism developed by Eberhard & Co. arranges the displays in a vertical row: small seconds, 24-hour display, 12-hour counter, and 30-minute counter. The entire mechanism features 53 jewels. It also includes a date display and a central stop-second function. The chronograph pushers are located at the 11 o’clock and 1 o’clock positions: start and stop on the left, reset on the right. The movement was fully overhauled in March 2021.
Case & Material
The domed tonneau case, made of stainless steel, measures 37 x 55 mm across the lugs, and 41.5 mm in length without the lugs, with a height of 12.9 mm. The crown is concealed at 12 o’clock beneath a spring-loaded cover; a small lever on the case back releases it. The case back is secured with four screws and bears the model name engraved in red. A domed sapphire crystal covers the case, and the watch is water-resistant to 3 ATM. The watch is worn on a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp. The case and bracelet show visible, well-maintained signs of wear.
Aesthetics & Readability
The black dial groups all four sub-dials in a column on the right-hand side, each framed by a silver-colored ring. On the left, there is space for the brand logo and the date window at 8 o’clock; a tachymeter scale encircles the center. Applied steel hour markers and skeletonized hands with luminescent coating define the time display. Red is reserved for the special functions: the central stopwatch seconds hand and the 24-hour display hand. This allows the elapsed time and timed intervals to be distinguished at a glance. The box and paperwork are included.
