Rolex Explorer II
Concept & History
The Reference 16570 from the Explorer II line represents the consistent evolution of the cave diver's watch, which was originally designed for speleologists. Introduced in the late 1980s, this model established the independent adjustability of the hour hand, which allowed for the reading of a second time zone. With an initial release date of approximately 1989, this example originates from an early production phase of the 16570, which is highly prized among collectors due to specific dial features. Its functionality as a true GMT watch underscores the pragmatic, instrument-like character of the series.
Caliber & Technology
Inside the watch is the automatic Caliber 3185, a movement developed and manufactured entirely in-house. This movement offers a power reserve of 50 hours and operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The architecture benefits from a free-sprung Breguet balance spring and a robust shock protection system that shields the movement from shocks. Recent maintenance work, documented by WEMPE Service in 2026, ensures excellent amplitude and the highest mechanical reliability for daily use.
Case & Material
The Oyster case, with a diameter of 40 mm is crafted from extremely corrosion-resistant 904L stainless steel, an alloy that sets the highest standards in the watchmaking industry. The fixed bezel with a 24-hour scale features the characteristic radial finish. The watch is designed to be water-resistant to 100 meters (10 ATM), secured by the Twinlock crown system and the solid, screw-down case back. Thanks to a comprehensive overhaul, the watch is in top condition, with the lines of the case sides preserved.
Aesthetics & Readability
The white dial, known among connoisseurs as “Polar,” maximizes the contrast with the black-outlined hour markers. This design ensures optimal readability in all lighting conditions. The red 24-hour hand adds a functional pop of color that matches the markings on the stainless steel bezel. A date window beneath the cyclops lens at three o’clock completes the layout, protected by scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The clean, instrument-style design eschews unnecessary decoration, uncompromisingly highlighting the utilitarian essence of this model.
