Rolex Explorer II
Concept & History
The Reference 216570 was presented to mark the 40th anniversary of the Explorer II and directly quotes the original reference 1655 („Freccione“) with its striking, orange-colored 24-hour hand. In contrast to its predecessors, the case diameter grew to 42 mm which significantly increased readability and presence on the wrist. This model from the year 2020 dates from the late production phase of this reference, shortly before it was discontinued and replaced by the successor model. The unworn condition makes this example an interesting contemporary document of the „Maxi Dial“ era.
Caliber & Technology
A special technical feature of reference 216570 is the use of the Caliber 3187. This manufacture movement with automatic winding was developed exclusively for this model. It differs from the widely used GMT caliber 3186 by an enlarged main plate and the use of rolex's own Paraflex shock protection, which makes the mechanism more resistant to shocks. The power reserve is approx. 48 hours. The blue Parachrom spiral made of a paramagnetic alloy ensures high stability against temperature fluctuations and magnetic fields.
Housing & material
The housing is made from a solid block Stainless steel 904L (Oystersteel). The fixed bezel with 24-hour graduation has a radial sunburst pattern, which is a distinguishing feature of the Explorer line. With 42 mm diameter and wide horns, the watch has a very robust appearance. The Twinlock winding crown ensures water resistance up to 100 meters (10 bar). A special feature of the version with a black dial is the so-called „phantom effect“: the base of the hands is painted black, making them appear to float above the dial.
Aesthetics & readability
The dial is designed for maximum contrast. The enlarged indices and hands are coated with blue Chromalight luminous material, which guarantees long-lasting luminosity in the dark. The orange 24-hour hand is used in combination with the bezel to differentiate between day and night - a function originally designed for speleologists and polar explorers - or to display a second time zone. The satin-finished Oyster bracelet with polished flanks and Oysterlock clasp including Easylink extension rounds off the functional appearance.
