The Double Split Ref. 404.032 marks a milestone in chronograph development: as the world's first mechanical timepiece with a double split-seconds function, it enables simultaneous split-time measurements not only for seconds but also for minutes. The complication presented by A. Lange & Söhne in 2004 combines flyback chronography with precise jumping minute counters in one 43.2 mm measuring, fully polished Rose gold-case. In contrast to the platinum version 404.035 the rose gold reference dispenses with alternating surface finishes in favor of a continuous polish, which lends the design an understated sophistication.

Caliber & Technology

The in-house Caliber L001.1 consists of 465 Components and 40 stones with a movement diameter of 30.5 mm and a height of 9.5 mm. The hand-wound movement works with 21,600 A/h (3 Hz) and provides a Power reserve of 38 hours. The three-layer movement architecture - base movement with gear train, chronograph mechanism and double rattrapante level above - is crowned by the characteristic „twin towers“ that control the split-seconds system. As the central processor, the column wheel orchestrates all chronograph functions, while Lange's first in-house balance spring guarantees precision.

Case & processing

The 18 carat rose gold-case with 15.3 mm height and 22 mm lug width combines a concave bezel with a seamless transition to the tachymeter scale ring. The characteristic stepped design of the case back - a typical Lange design element - reduces the visual weight of the watch, which weighs over 200 grams (without strap). The sapphire crystal case back provides a view of the finissage with Three-quarter board, Geneva strip, Perlage and hand-engraved components. The Water resistance up to 3 ATM meets the standards for luxury chronographs without the claim to be a sports watch.

Aesthetics & Readability

The argenté-coloured dial made of galvanized solid silver features three hierarchical levels: outer tachymeter scale, main dial and recessed sub-dials. The power reserve indicator at 12 o'clock replaces the large date on other Lange chronographs, while the enlarged sub-dial at 4 o'clock carries the chronograph with flyback function. The double split-seconds hands - blued steel hands for seconds and minutes and rose gold-colored main hands - allow intermediate time measurements of up to 30 minutes. Rose gold-colored hands and applied hour indices without numerals create classic legibility with reduced visual complexity compared to previous generations.

Concept & technology

The Long 31 with the reference 130.032 represents a technical turning point in precision watchmaking. It was the first mechanical wristwatch in the world to offer a Power reserve from 31 days. In order to store this enormous amount of energy, two stacked barrels, each with 185-centimeter-long springs, are used. Due to the high torque forces, the movement is not wound via the crown, but via a separate Key elevator on the back of the case. A patented tensioning mechanism between the double mainspring barrel and the oscillating system ensures a constant drive throughout the month and therefore maximum rate stability.

Caliber & Details

The monumental Caliber L034.1 consists of 406 individual parts and completely fills the case volume. It is regulated in the classic way via a Gooseneck fine adjustment on the hand-engraved balance bridge. Despite its massive dimensions, the movement is finished to the highest Glashütte standards: The three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver is finished with the Glashütte stripe cut while the bearing jewels are mounted in screwed Gold chatons are set. Blued screws and polished Chamfers underline the craftsmanship of this Grande Complication.

Case & Construction

The case made of 18 carat red gold measures 45.9 mm in diameter and has a height of 15.9 mm on. These dimensions are due to the design to accommodate the enormous energy stores. The three-part design features the typical alternation of polished bezels and satin-finished middle section. The lugs are manufactured separately and screwed on. The sapphire crystal on the back provides a view of the winding mechanism and the overcoil movement, which switches visibly every ten seconds.

Aesthetics & Readability

The solid silver dial in the color Argenté presents the information with surgical clarity. The dominant element is the large power reserve display in the right-hand segment, whose scale covers the entire month. The characteristic Large date at the 10 o'clock position provides a visual counterweight. The hands and appliqués made of Red gold correspond harmoniously with the case material. A hand-stitched alligator leather strap secures the considerable weight of the timepiece on the wrist.

Concept & History

Mit der Referenz 116.025 erweiterte A. Lange & Söhne die Lange 1-Familie im Jahr 2005 um eine Zeitzonenfunktion für Reisende, die permanent zwei Zonenzeiten ablesen möchten. Der drehbare, mit 24 Städtenamen bedruckte Ring erlaubt die unmittelbare Zuordnung der Referenzstadt über den Drücker bei 8 Uhr, wobei der Stundenzeiger des kleinen Zifferblatts synchron mitspringt. Die dezentrale Zifferblattarchitektur der Lange 1 wurde beibehalten und um ein zweites Subzifferblatt für die Heimatzeit ergänzt. Ein applizierter Pfeil bei 5 Uhr markiert die gewählte Zonenstadt, zwei weitere Pfeile zeigen Tag oder Nacht für beide Zeitzonen an.

Caliber & Technology

Das Handaufzugskaliber L031.1 stammt aus eigener Fertigung und treibt neben der Standardanzeige auch die Zeitzonenmechanik an. Es besitzt eine Gangreserve von 72 hours bei einer Unruhfrequenz von 21.600 Halbschwingungen pro Stunde (3 Hz) und umfasst 417 Einzelteile. Charakteristisch sind die Dreiviertelplatine aus naturbelassenem Neusilber mit Glashütter Streifendekor, verschraubte Goldchatons sowie der handgravierte Unruhkloben mit Schwanenhals-Feinregulierung. Durch den Saphirglasboden lassen sich diese Finissage-Merkmale des Manufakturkalibers L031.1 im Detail betrachten.

Case & Material

The case made of solid Platinum 950 measures 41.9 mm im Durchmesser bei einer Bauhöhe von 11 mm. Die polierte Lünette steht im Kontrast zur übrigen Gehäuseoberfläche, die Wasserdichtigkeit ist mit 3 bar angegeben. Der verschraubte und gravierte Gehäuseboden aus Saphirglas gibt den Blick auf das Uhrwerk frei. Das vorliegende Exemplar ist mit einem schwarzen Alligatorlederband ausgestattet und wurde im Rahmen der Revision 2026 bei A. Lange & Söhne serviciert, der entsprechende Beleg liegt vor.

Aesthetics & Readability

Das Zifferblatt aus Massivsilber in Rhodié-Ausführung trägt Appliken und Indizes aus massivem Gold, die Zeiger sind aus rhodiniertem Gold und gebläutem Stahl gefertigt. Die dezentrale Anordnung von Stunden-/Minutenanzeige, kleiner Sekunde, Großdatum und Gangreserveanzeige folgt der charakteristischen Lange 1-Architektur und sorgt für eine klare Ablesbarkeit trotz der zusätzlichen Zeitzonen-Subanzeige. Zwei Tag-/Nacht-Indikatoren ergänzen die Funktionalität für Heimat- und Ortszeit.
